Upcoming Reversible USB3.1 Cable
The upcoming USB 3.1 specification, an update to USB 3.0 that provides a throughput of up to 10 Gbit/s, also includes a new "Type C" connector, which is reversible much like Apples Lightning cable.
The new Type-C standard will be similar in size to the current Micro USB connector, typically used for charging mobile phones and cameras.
The first USB cables were released in the mid-1990s and, until now, could only be plugged into a computer or other device one way round to ensure a data connection.
The reversible design, which looks a lot like a Lightning cable, aims to replace USB and Micro USB with one cable that can be used from either direction.
Other improvements to the new cable include:
Support for scalable power charging, allowing the cable to offer up to 100 watts
Data speed transfers of up to 10 gigabits per second, double what is possible at the moment
A promise that the new design will accommodate further upgrades
Expect USB3.1 to be a bit farther out but it is definitely coming sooner than many expect.
